The right to refuse service business owners and gay marriage
Legally speaking, the Supreme Court has previously established the precedent that private business owners have the right to refuse service to a potential customer on the grounds of religious beliefs, though public schools and government funded agencies are legally unable to discriminate against anyone on the account of race, creed, or sexuality.
The Supreme Court has established that political discrimination by private businesses is also legal. Only one question remains: should business owners be allowed to do this? Personally, I think they should.
“The Right to Discriminate”: Should Private Business Owners Be Allowed to Refuse Service?
Both arguments are correct, which has made it difficult for me to decide how to form my opinion on this matter. Though I vehemently oppose discrimination against minorities and women, I have no sympathy for racists and bigots. Ultimately, I believe that the government should not dictate what private business owners can and cannot do outside of enforcing and ensuring the safety and rights of protected classes in the workplace.
