Call it the Return of the Gay Subtext, except that such a thing isn't really possible anymore. Cem just might be Turkish or Iranian, it's never said which or if he is. According to a review of the book on the German Amazon, the pair are lovers. I saw this film way back in the day at The Chicago Film Festival for a college class.
I revisited it recently, and I think it's a better movie than most give it credit for.
LGBT highlights at Chicago film festival
It's not spectacular, but it's simple, and it tries to explore a gay relationship, but it really isn't nuanced. It's definitely mid grade festival fare, and perhaps my nostalgia is affecting me, but it's interesting, and worth checking out if you like underground LGBTQ cinema. Where to watch Trailer.
